Block test results

I've so far gotten back all my results except for Economics. A for Maths, B for Physics and D for Chemistry. A C6 for GP cause I failed by comprehension paper badly despite doing well for the essay section. I'm kind of disappointed with Physics as I could have easily gotten an A if I had studied the definitions and read the questions properly. Chemistry is another story altogether. I've been scoring Cs and Ds for Chemistry since J1. Albeit I scored an A2 for O level Chem, my Chem foundation is very weak. This block test covered only two major topics, organic chemistry and ionic equilibria, but I still did so badly. If I score a C grade or below for Econs, I'll drop Chemistry... else I'll stay on and try to battle it out.

Block test finally over!

Phew, the block test is finally over. I think I'll be forced to drop one subject as I know I totally messed up my Chemistry paper. There were like ten questions which I had no idea at all, and I could not remember the reagents and conditions of several reactions. Deduction of a few marks here and there will definitely cause me to fail the paper... I've already thought through it and will probably drop either Chemistry or Econs, but its most probably Chemistry. It is my second weakest Science subject after Biology.

I'm so bored now, I've got bored with all the computer games I have. FIFA 2006 is boring... Diablo II requires lots of time... Flight Sims aren't realistic enough... I'm waiting till Oblivion is in stores before I can buy and play it. And I'm so looking forward to HL2's expansion set releasing in end-April.

Levi Kries (featured in Apprentice)

Levi Kries' songs are really nice. I especially like "Nothing Can Be Everything". He was first made known to everyone through The Apprentice where teams had to choose an unknown artiste to produce a song. His song helped team Capital Edge to win that challenge.

NTU Economics Seminar

I attended this Econs seminar held by NTU for JC students and teachers today. It's the first time I've been to NTU, so it was really an eye-opener for me. Their lecture theatre is large and comfortable. At least the pull-up tables are twice the size of NYJC's. I think every JC sent students there, and it was really great to see students from all the JCs coming together for lectures, haha.

The seminar had several lectures on topics such as Rise of China, Special Roles of Prices in Singapore, Meaning of Competition and Exchange Rate System in Singapore. The lectures have definitely given me a greater insight into Economics at University level. Although one particular lecture about Gender and the Singapore Labour Market scared me with several mathematical and quantitative economics, I still enjoyed it a lot. Of course, there were a couple of lecturers who were boring, the others were alright. One lecturer said that Apple designed the Big Mac and had everyone laughing.

I have also learnt concepts which were not taught in class too. One of which is dynamic competition. In school, I learnt "competition" as a market structure, but the lecture on "Meaning of Competition" defined "competition" as to literally, compete by means of pushing down prices and coming up with quality products.

Although this seminar has given me greater interest in Economics, I still prefer aerospace engineering as I'm really interested in the aviation industry. It doesn't hurt to know Economics though as it plays a part in my everyday life.

A very nice joke

"Everybody who has a dog calls it something like "Rover" or "Spot" or "Bruno" But I thought I'd call my dog "Sex."

Now my dog, Sex, has been very embarrassing to me. When I went to the city hall to renew his license, I told the clerk I would like a license for Sex. He said, "I'd like to have one too". Then I said, "But this is a dog." He said he didn't care what she looked like. Then I said, "You don't understand. I've had Sex since I was nine years old." He said that I must have been quite a kid.

When I got married and went on my honeymoon, I took the dog with us. I told the hotel clerk that I wanted a room for my wife and me, and a special room for Sex. He said that every room in the hotel was for sex. So I finally said, "You don't understand. Sex keeps me awake at night." The clerk said, "Me too."

One day I entered Sex in a contest, but before the competition began, the dog ran away. Another contestant asked me why I was just standing there looking around. I told him I had planned to have Sex in the contest. He told me that I should have sold my own tickets. "But you don't understand," I told him, "I had hoped to have Sex on TV." HE called me a show-off.

When my wife and I separated, we went to court to fight for custody of the dog. I told the judge, "Your honor, I had Sex before I was married." The judge said, "Me too." Then I told him that after I was married, Sex left me. He said, "Me too."

Last night Sex ran away. I spent hours looking for him around town. A cop came over to me and asked, "What are you doing in this alley at four o'clock in the morning?" I told him, "I'm looking for Sex."

My trial comes up Friday :-("

End of term...

Term 1 of JC2 is coming too an end very, very soon. Time really flies ever since I entered JC. There're so many activities everyday that don't have the time to think of "what to do next", or "what food should I eat for lunch later", or "holidays are coming!".

Block test commences right after the March holidays, that means I've to spend the whole holidays studying for it. In Sec school, exams were always before the holidays, thus allowing us to really enjoy the break. Now, especially with the new principal, my mind is almost completely focused on A levels. Almost everyday, somehow or another, I get reminded of my goal of the A levels.

It's really a pity that JC is only 2 years. I quote my Econs tutor "A CEO usually signs a 3 year contract. The first year is to adapt to the company, second year to make an impact, 3rd year to enjoy the fruits". I am finally adapted to NYJC lifestyle and people after Year 1, and I'm feeling happy and optimistic about life in NYJC right now. But I do not have a third year to enjoy and improve on the friendships I built in JC.

A joke to share:

A man is flying in a hot air balloon and realizes he is lost. He reduces height and spots a man down below. He lowers the balloon further and shouts:
"Excuse me, can you tell me where I am?"
The man below says, "Yes, you're in a hot air balloon, hovering 30 feet above this field."
"You must work in information technology" says the balloonist.
"I do," replies the man. "How did you know."
"Well," says the balloonist, "everything you have told me is technically correct, but it's of no use to anyone."
The man below says, "You must be a corporate manager."
"I am," replies the balloonist, "but how did you know?"
"Well", says the man, "You don't know where you are, or where you're going, but you expect me to be able to help. You're in the same position you were before we met, but now it's my fault."

Exhausting JC life

Every Thursday, I have to endure 3 hours of non-stop tutorial lessons. Every tutorial lasts for an hour, with 3 straight tutorials for Maths, Economics and Chemistry from 1.15pm to 4.15pm. It's the worst time-table I've ever had, and it's starting to take the toll on me. Today, I skipped lunch to attend a talk held by the University of Caterbera in New Zealand. It was probably a wrong decision as the University specialised more in Arts subjects than in Science subjects like engineering. So I kind of wasted the time there. As I did not eat anything before that, I had to endure the 3 hours of tutorial in hunger. I'd rather have a 30 mins break in between... I'll definitely treasure the lunch break which is before the grueling 3-hour tutorial session, from now on.

Tomorrow is Jing Hang's birthday. She's one of the 9 people in my NJ TRP clique. It's really special to still be able to maintain quite frequent contact even when we're in different JCs. It's the first time I've made good friends in just a short period of 3 months, I still find it quite amazing.
Anyway, we celebrated her birthday today as some of us could not make it tomorrow. We went to Jack's Place near AJC where she studied. Luckily Jack's Place had a student's meal, or else we'd be paying $15 instead of $6.50 (for the student's meal) for the dinner there. They even bought cake and Jack's Place played a kiddy happy birthday song while presenting Jing Hang the cake. It was really nice though.
Thinking about it, my birthday is still 7 months away and it'll probably not be the happiest of my birthdays as it is very near the A level exams.
Crunch time for everyone!

A level results release

The 2005 A-Level results were released this afternoon. The ex-JC2 students got back their results while I got back my Chinese AO results. I attained a B4 for it. I'm not really satisfied as I was aiming for at least a B3. Only 3 people from my class got a distinction though, and they were the expected few. According to stats, only 27.8% of the cohort scored an A or B grade, my B4 grade is the lowest grade in that band... :(

In my opinion, NYJC's A-level results were lousy as well. Only a pathetic 7.2% of the cohort managed to get a A or B in GP. That's less than 70 out of 880 students! From the moment I entered NYJC, I've been doubtful about its GP course. And it's true, NYJC's GP sucks.
The top student of NYJC scored 8 distinctions, and about 50 students attained 3 or more distinctions. How I wish I were in NJC, the atmosphere would be even more inspiring, with probably a whole LT of people scoring 3 or more distinctions. But the scene at the NYJC hall was inspiring enough for me, and probably every J2 there. I certainly hope to be one of the top students in NYJC! :)
